Smartphones going foldable is always a hot topic of discussion and we already have some very impressive examples of how it can be done. The Samsung Galaxy Fold had its problems, it’s true, but the Galaxy Z flip is by all accounts a pretty terrific foldable phone.
It’s surely only a matter of time before Apple joins the fray with a foldable of its own. but YouTuber Jon Prosser says that we shouldn’t expect to see an actual folding display.
Instead, Prosser reckons that the foldable iphone that’s currently being prototyped is actually two displays attached by a hinge. but don’t worry, it’s said to look way better than it sounds.
Even though they’re two separate panels, when the displays are extended, it looks fairly continuous and seamless.
We’ve seen LG have a go at making a phone with an attachment that adds a second screen and, frankly, it seems pretty poor. The idea of Apple having a go and doing a better job of it is interesting but we’ll reserve judgement until we see it.
Making a foldable iphone that doesn’t have a folding screen has one obvious benefit – none of the reliability issues that have plagued other foldable phones so far. No screens scratching because they’re plastic and no dust ingress because at the edges. but again, we’re holding off on deciding whether this sounds like a winner until we see it. If there’s too big of a gap between the two screens when open, it’s a no-go from us.
Our fingers are very much crossed on this one.
